James Salter ( - c. 1728)

Alias Don Saltero

Coffee-house proprietor who displayed cabinets of curiosities, some of which were donated by Sir Hans Sloane.

Alluded to in 1705 by Bowack in his brief survey of Chelsea, remarking upon the "good Conversation for which this Place is at Present noted, that the many Honourable Worthy Inhabitants ... living in perfect Amity among themselves, and hav[ing] a general meeting every Day at a Coffee house near the Church, well known for the pretty Collection of Rarities in Nature and Art, some of which are very curious" (13).

His coffee-house was located first on Lawrence Street around 1695, then moved to Danvers Street, and finally to 18 Cheyne Walk, Chelsea, in 1717.

See Bryan, 108-112.

Emanuel Mendes da Costa includes Salter in his MS list of literati and collectors, noting that "[h]is Daughter, Mrs. Hall, continued in it till about 1758 or 1759, when others took it, who made a catalogue, and still keep the curiosities carefully" (207). In fact, the catalogues began well before that.
