William Petty, Rev. (1587 - 1639)

Scholar, educator, and Arundel's chaplain and agent, "a man whose knowledge, stamina and energy were unbounded" (Leith-Ross, 165). Arundel sent him to Turkey to acquire antiquities ("marbles") and asked Sir Thomas Roe (another of his agents, and ambassador there) to prepare the way for him. Despite being double-crossed by Petty, "Roe was unable to conceal his admiration for him: 'Ther was never man so fitted to an imployment, that encounters all accidents with so unwearied patience; eates with Greekes on their worst dayes; lyes with fishermen on plancks, at the best; is all things to all men, that he may obteyne his ends'," namely to acquire objects for Arundel (Leith-Ross, 165).
