Francis Cleyn (1582 - 1658)

Alias Francis Clein (alias)

Painter and tapestry designer. According to Leith-Ross, he is probably the "Mr. Cline" named as a benefactor in Musaeum Tradescantianum:
He worked in Denmark before coming to England to become chief designer for the Mortlake tapestry works, for which he drew many original designs. The tapestry works, founded in 1619, stood on the north side of Mortlake High Street and employed skilled workers from Flanders. Clein was also employed on drawing pictures for the King and book illustrations for George Sandys; he was reputed to have been the master of the portrait painter, William Dobson" (178).
