John Covel (2 Apr 1638 - 19 Dec 1722)

Clergyman and naturalist. In 1670 he went to Constantinople as Chaplain to the Levant Company, travelling widely in the region observing and reporting on plants and architecture. He was a collector of curiosities, including paintings, coins and medals, printed books, and especially of manuscripts. In his later years, contributed to the study of fossils.
