John Woodward reference a passage where Smith describes a "Wall near Philadelphia, said to be made
of Christians Bones, by the Turks at their taking the City . . . as an Instance of the Turkish Barbarity. The passage in Smith's English translation is thus:
there being about a mile and a half out of Town to the South, a thick wall of mens bones consusedly cemented together with the stones; in all probability raised by his command: (for sure none but such a Barbarian would have done it) in complyance perchance with some rash vow that he had made, when he lay fretting and storming before it” (Remarks upon the manners, 241-42).
