Richard Browne, Sir (6 May 1605 - 1683)

Diplomat and only son of Christopher Browne (d. 1645) of Saye's Court, Deptford, and Thomasine (b. 1563), daughter of Benjamin Gonson (c. 1525–1577). His daughter, Mary, married the diarist John Evelyn.

In February 1641, he was sent as ambassador to the queen of Bohemia and the elector palatine. In July, he was sent as ambassador to Paris, where he remained until 1660, acting as ambassador to Charles I during the civil wars and to Charles II in exile: "During this period his chapel became a focal point for those royalists who were attached to the liturgy of the Church of England, and he is reported to have protected clerics who argued against Catholicism" (DNB).
