Hubert's title page to his printed catalogue (1664) declares that his collection could be viewed "at the place called the Musick-House at the Mitre, near the west end of St. Paul's church." Sir John Hawkins (1853) seems to take this location as an indication that Hubert was "a lover of music" (700). The Mitre was located at 8 London-House Yard. After the fire of 1666, the rebuilt house was named the Lyre, and in 1717, the Goose and Gridiron (Dead Pubs, cf Hawkins 8:10).

Daniel Colwall donated fossils to Hubert's collection in 1665 (Torrens, 208). He received his African electric ray from the King of France (George 184).

Hunter compares Hubert's catalogue with that of the Royal Society's catalogue and concludes, "It is almost as if the 'scientific' characteristics of Grew's catalogue were imposed on a collection which remained inspired by the criteria of rarity and curiosity typical of
virtuoso cabinets" (165). The membership of the Royal Society "clearly shared the preoccupation with the outlandish and the extraordinary, and the disdain for the commonplace, which is so marked in virtuoso collections like Hubert's" (Hunter 165).

Moreover, The Gentleman of these Rarities can shew thousands of other Rarities of Nature besides the things aforementioned, to those that are more curious, and will be at some more Charge. The manner of shewing as followeth.

On Mondayes and Thursdayes, things of the Sea: as, several sorts of Sea-plants, Zoophyts, Rare stones of the Sea, strange Corals, and things of two or three Natures growing together, and likewise beautifull Rare Shels.

On Tuesdayes and Fridayes things of the Land; as Metals, Minerals, Transmutations, or things turned into stones: stones of Rare shapes, Chrystals and precious stones, as they are natural in ther mines; strange Fruits and Excrescents, and things of strange nature and operation.

On Wednesdayes and Saturdayes, things of the Sea, Land, and Ayre: as strange Bones, and Teeth of divers Creatures, several Eges of Fowls and Serpents, several small Creatures of the Sea, several small creeping or venomous Creatures of the Land; 200 or 300 species of Insects, or Flies of the land or ayr, several pieces of Amber with Flyes or Insects, involved in the transparent Amber.

Be pleased to note further, that if any Nobleman or person of quality be desirous to see alone with their Families and Friends, all, or most of them: The owner of them will endeavour to give satisfaction for half a day together, so that the noble minded person be pleased to give the Master of the Rarities notice a day before by some sufficient party, to put by the great Concourse of people for that day.

SsoSo likewise, if any forraign Ambassadours be pleased to do the same, the Gentleman that owneth the above-mentioned things, will do his best to declare them to their Excellencies content in three or four Languages, if they please to repair to his dwelling, which hath been formerly the Musique-house at the West end of S. Pauls.

The whole Structure of this Animal is very remarkable, and particularly his Eyes are wonderfully contrived; viz. Between the fourth and last Pair of Claws on each Side, reckoning from his Mouth (and excluding the small Pair there plac'd) are inserted, as it were, the Rudiments of another Pair or a Claw broken off on each side at the second Joynt or Elbow; On these Extremities, are the Eyes placed (like those on the Horns of Snails) but being under the Covert of a very thick and Opake Shell, Nature in that Place has wonderfully contrived a Transparent Lanthorn, through which the Light is conveyed, whose Superficies very exactly resembles the great Eyes of our large Libellæ, or Adderbolts, which to the naked Sight are plainly perceived to be composed of innumerable Globuli; these, like them, are oblong, and guarded with a Testaceous Supercilium.
