Ralph Palmer, Esq. (1635 - 1 Feb 1715/6)

A monument in the Old Church of Chelsea names Ralph Palmer Esq. of Little Chelsea, "a near relation to Dr. Hamey" (Baldwin Hamey the younger, 1600-1676) and "a kind Benefactor to this Church," who died 1 February 1715/6 at age 80, predeceased by his wife, Alice, 14 September 1708 (Faulkner 1810, 84). Around 1674 Palmer contributed £80 for recasting the church's great bell (Faulkner 1829, 134). He was a frequent correspondent of his son in law, John Verney, first Viscount Fermanagh, who married his daughter Elizabeth (1640–1717; ODNB). Beaver cites a letter from Palmer to Fermanagh on new year's day 1712/3 regarding Sloane's major purchase of Lord Cheyne's estate (189). Palmer's wife, Alice White, was "of the family of Dr. Francis White, Bishop of Ely" (Beaver, 332).

Palmer is named as a benefactor in Salter's museum catalogue. Beaver cites a "copy of a prayer of the Lord Strafford's at his execution ... endorsed in the handwriting of Ralph Palmer: 'Given me by Moses Goodyear, Esq., who stood by him at his execution for being in the Popish Plot, in King Charles II's reign" (Beaver, 117). Goodyear was also a benefactor of Salter's museum.
