Thomas Herbert, 1st Baronet (1606 - 1682)
Traveller, government official, historian, antiquary, and a gentleman of the bedchamber of King Charles I. He received his baronetcy at the Restoration. He travelled widely to Persia, Africa, and India, including Madagascar and Mauritius. According to Leith-Ross,In 1680 Herbert wrote to Elias Ashmole saying that South Lambeth was 'a place I well know, having bin sundry times at Mr Tredescons (to whom I gave severall things I collected in my travaills) & was much delighted with his gardens', describing them as 'a place of much pleasure as well as privacy' (180).Named as a benefactor in Musaeum Tradescantianum.
