Nicholaus, the Elder Staphorst ( - fl. 1701)

Chemist and director of the Chemical Laboratory of the Royal College of Physicians in London with oversight of the garden as well (Armytage, 26). In 1683 he was cataloging the plants in the garden, and in 1686, he published his Officina Chymica Londinensis (Ibid.). Staphorst emigrated from Hamburg, where he "belong to an important family originating from Staphorst, near Hoya, Low-Saxon, West Germany" (Zeven, 152). He was employed by Sloane (to whom he also taught chemistry) as a translator under Ray's supervision and "must have been known by Petiver" (ibid.). Botanist
