Worshipful Society of Apothecaries (1617 - )

Alias Society of Apothecaries [Alias]

One of the livery companies of the City of London, it was founded in 1617, formed out of the Grocers' Company (founded 1345). They were granted a separate, Royal Charter by James I. During the remainder of the 17th century its members (including Nicholas Culpeper) challenged the College of Physicians members' monopoly of practising medicine. Its physic garden was at Chelsea.
